Only a political solution can put an end to the Syrian conflict

DRC / Syria / Ceasefire - Remarks to the press by Mr. François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations - 3 January 2016

Number one, after the December 31st agreement on DRC, we have prepared and circulated a draft Presidential Statement to bring the support of the Security Council to this very important agreement on DRC. So I just wanted to share that with you.

Number two, with respect to the situation in Syria, we are very worried by the continued offensives carried by the regime forces in several locations in the country, including in Wadi Barada, close to Damascus. We condemn these offensives. These violations of the ceasefire, which as you know entered into force on December the 30th, threaten any credible new start of the intra-Syrian negotiations under UN mediation. They also compromise the objective of a free, unconditional and comprehensive humanitarian access to populations in need, as reaffirmed by the Resolution 2328 of the Security Council.

As a guarantor of the agreement, Russia has a very important role to play for its strict implementation.

And finally, we recall that only a political solution can put an end to the Syrian conflict. And that’s what Resolution 2336, unanimously adopted last week, is also all about. So here are a few things I wanted to tell you just to start the New Year.

Q: Ambassador, what’s happening with the chemical weapons resolution, the draft?

That’s a good question, it’s still under consideration, for us it’s a very important priority, not only with respect to Syria but with respect to the non-proliferation in general, preventing the proliferation of mass destruction in general and their use. So it’s a very high priority, now with respect to the timing, we are considering the best options, but it will come.

Q: What’s the delay in putting it into a vote?
There is no delay.
