The Security Council reaffirms its support to the stability in south Lebanon
UN secretary general selection / Lebanon / Western Sahara - Remarks to the press by Mr. François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations - 30 August 2016
Q: Are we getting closer to a decision on the selection of the SG?
I will not comment on the substance for obvious reasons, but I think yesterday’s straw poll was very helpful in terms of allowing us to move forward for the selection of the Secretary-General.
One word on UNIFIL: as we mark the 10 year anniversary of resolution 1701, we are very pleased that we are about to renew for one year the mandate of UNIFIL. Negotiations went very well and in the best positive spirit. We hope we will have unanimity.
UNIFIL has been playing a key role to preserve the cessation of hostilities in the south of Lebanon. I would like to pay tribute to its very important work. As you know, France is and will remain committed to UNIFIL both politically and on the ground. This is a very important mission.
With this adoption, the Security Council reaffirms its full support to the mission and to the stability in south Lebanon.
Q: How concerned are you about the situation in Western Sahara?
We are following the developments very closely. But it’s important to keep in mind that the global picture is positive. There is a positive momentum here that needs to be continued and I believe it is the case.
