UNSC about to adopt milestone resolution to support a durable peace in Colombia
Colombia – Remarks to the press by Mr François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations - 13 September 2016
Today is another very important day for the peace process in Colombia. The resolution we are about to adopt is a milestone resolution to support a durable peace in Colombia.
This resolution means two key things:
1) First, it will guarantee that when the cease-fire agreed in June by the two parties comes into effect, the UN will be on the ground to monitor the situation and make sure the agreement is fully implemented. This is a significant step forward to end a 50 years old conflict.
2) Number two, this resolution is also the demonstration that the Security Council is able to get united and effective when it comes to peace and security. It is a very important lesson. Thanks to our collective work within the Council and with the Secretariat, the UN will fulfill their duty and answer the call of the two parties.
This is why the resolution we are about to adopt is a very important success for Colombia but also for the United Nations.
