The United Nations has been present in
Kosovo since 1999 through the United Nations Interim Administration Mission.
Kosovo is the subject of a quarterly review at the Security Council. The Security Council also periodically examines the situation in
Bosnia-Herzegovina, since it authorizes the deployment of the European Force on the ground. The United Nations is also involved in the Balkans through the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former
Yugoslavia, a subsidiary organ of the Security Council, tasked with the prosecution of war criminals. In addition, a United Nations force has been deployed in
Cyprus since 1964.
