The United Nations is present in Afghanistan through a civil assistance mission tasked with supporting the country’s democratic transition. A peacekeeping operation is deployed in Timor-Leste. A special political mission in support of the peace process in Nepal ended in January 2011.
Sanctions have been imposed on North Korea since 2006; these were strengthened in 2009 due to its nuclear program. A sanctions committee ensures the proper implementation of the Security Council resolutions by the international community. The Council is also seized of the tensions between North and South Koreas.
The Security Council also closely monitors Burma due to the country’s internal situation. The issue of Sri Lanka was discussed by the Council in 2009 due to serious humanitarian concerns.
