I have just learnt that Mr. Ban Ki-moon was re-elected by acclamation as Secretary-General by the United Nations General Assembly. I welcome this and along with the President of the Republic, I wish to congratulate him.
Throughout his first term, Mr. Ban Ki-moon has shown his total commitment to the United Nations. He has led it with steadfast determination. He has shown courage and lucidity in times of crises, including those we have experienced in recent months.
I am confident that Mr. Ban Ki-moon will continue with the same tenacity and that he will work towards strengthening the effectiveness of the UN system to ensure that it remains at the heart of international peace and security. I also know he takes the French language to heart at the UN.
The Secretary-General can count on the full support of France throughout his second term.
