Statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs
France utterly condemns the deliberate massacre of civilians by forces acting on behalf of Laurent Gbagbo yesterday at the Abobo market. France offers its sincere condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones and to the Ivorian government.
On March 11, the Security Council urged all the Ivorian parties to comply immediately with the African Union decision of March 10, which clearly confirms its recognition of Alassane Outtara as President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire. France supports the Security Council’s swift adoption of sanctions against Laurent Gbagbo and his principal backers.
France reiterates its call to send a credible, independent and impartial international commission of inquiry to the site under the auspices of the UN in order to get to the bottom of these atrocities.
It wants to see those responsible for these crimes brought to justice as quickly as possible.
