I welcome the adoption by the UN General Assembly of a resolution on the safety of journalists.
It calls on states to prevent violence against journalists, while respecting their independence, and to combat impunity for the perpetrators of this violence.
On France’s initiative, the resolution proclaims November 2 as “International Day To End Impunity For Crimes against Journalists.” The date was chosen in honor of Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon who were murdered in Mali on November 2, 2013.
It’s now up to us to do everything possible, in their memory, to ensure that such crimes against the fundamental right to inform and be informed do not go unpunished.
