3 August 2010 - Gaza Flottilla - Announcement by the UN Secretary-General of an international Panel of Inquiry - Statement by the deputy spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs at today’s daily press briefing in Paris

(Unofficial translation)

"France welcomes the UN Secretary-General’s announcement of the establishment of a Panel of Inquiry on the tragic events that took place off the coast of Gaza on May 31.

This initiative is in line with the presidential statement adopted by the Security Council on June 1, which called for the establishment of "a prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation conforming to international standards."

We welcome the Israeli authorities’ decision to take part in this panel, which will include Geoffrey Palmer, former Prime Minister of New Zealand; Alvaro Uribe, the outgoing President of Colombia; and representatives from Turkey and Israel."
