The Ministre d’Etat will participate, from September 19 to 23 in New York, in the "Ministerial Week" which will open the 66th session of the UN General Assembly (September 2011 - September 2012)
— On September 19, Alain Juppé will deliver a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations, which is one of the most influential think tanks in the United States and which publishes the "Foreign Affairs" magazine. The Ministre d’Etat’s speech will focus on the "Arab Spring." On the same day he will also participate in a meeting organized by the UN Secretary-General on the international fight against terrorism.
— On Tuesday, September 20, Alain Juppé will attend a summit meeting, in the presence of President Sarkozy, devoted to Libya. He will then chair a ministerial follow-up meeting to the "Deauville Partnership for the Arab countries," launched at the most recent Summit of the G8 Heads of State and Government, the presidency of which is held by France.
— On Wednesday, September 21, the Ministre d’Etat will attend the speech delivered by President Sarkozy to the UN General Assembly, before co-chairing with the Minister for Ecology, Sustainable Development, Transport and Housing, Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, a session devoted to global governance of the environment and the plans for a world environmental organization, issues that are at the heart of the French presidency of the G20.
— On Thursday, September 22, Alain Juppé will attend a meeting devoted to nuclear safety and security, at the invitation of the UN Secretary-General, during which President Sarkozy is scheduled to deliver a speech. He will then participate in a summit organized by the Lebanese presidency of the Security Council, on the topic of "Preventive diplomacy."
Alain Juppé will also participate in several Francophonie events, notably a meeting of francophone ministers, at the invitation of Switzerland and Micheline Calmy-Rey - Switzerland will hold the presidency of the International Organization of la Francophonie until 2012,- which will be devoted to democratic transitions in the francophone region and to the importance of Francophonie in global governance.
The General Assembly is the plenary organ of the United Nations. Every year, during a session that takes place from September to December, it brings together representatives of the 193 Member States in order to focus on the work of the commissions and regularly holds additional sessions throughout the year. This year, the President of the General Assembly is Nassir Abdulaziz al-Nasser, who was received in Paris by the Ministre d’Etat on August 31.
