Declaration of Libya’s liberation by the National Transitional Council – Statement by Mr. Alain Juppé, {Ministre d’Etat}, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, 23 October 2011 Retour à la table des matières

The declaration of Libya’s liberation by the National Transitional Council (NTC) marks the victory of the Libyan people, to whose courage, unity and dignity France pays tribute.

The period of dictatorship, violence and division is over. Libyans can now work together calmly to build a democratic state that respects human rights, in a spirit of unity and national reconciliation.

France trusts the new Libyan authorities to implement their political road map and establish a representative transitional government as quickly as possible.

France also trusts the NTC to swiftly take the necessary measures guaranteeing the humanitarian organizations access to all those among the population who need them.

France stood alongside the Libyan people throughout their struggle for freedom. She remains at their side in supporting the country’s democratic transition and swift reconstruction.

On behalf of the French government and people, I pay tribute to those martyred by Gaddafi and to the freedom fighters. I offer the Libyan people my warmest wishes, at a time when they are starting to write a new page in their history.
