France expresses its outrage following the attack perpetrated against the head of the Human Rights Office of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
France utterly condemns this act of violence against a UN official, and, moreover, against an official whose remit is to monitor the human rights situation in order to afford the civilian populations greater protection against violence and arbitrariness.
France reaffirms that UN officials enjoy immunity while exercising their functions. The perpetration of acts of violence against them by police officers is all the more troubling since it constitutes an attack on one of the principles that ensure the effectiveness of United Nations action.
Following the attack perpetrated last week against the civilian populations by militias dressed in army uniforms which left several hundred people dead, this new act of violence is unacceptable. France will give its utmost attention to the investigation announced by the authorities of South Sudan and urges them to immediately bring the perpetrators to justice. It calls on them to take the necessary measures to prevent acts of violence against the civilian populations as well as the UN personnel deployed in the country. Lastly, France urges the authorities of South Sudan to continue to cooperate with the United Nations with respect to the protection and the promotion of human rights.
