The 42nd session of the Commission on Population and Development will be held from March 30th to April 3rd, 2009 in New York.
This year, the CPD will deal with the "Contribution of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development to the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals". Three keynote speakers will address the Commission on : The implications of population growth and changing age structures for the achievement of the MDGs; The impacts of population growth on the least developed countries, with special emphasis on the role of reproductive health; Gender, population and the achievement of the MDGs.
The French Development Agency (AFD) together with UNFPA, DSW and GTZ, is organising a Side Event on "Sub-Saharan Africa’s Demographic Challenges -Meeting the demand for sexual and reproductive health information and services in Africa", on March 30th, 2009.
This meeting will be an opportunity to present Africa’s demographic challenges (state of the art and needs), to promote a universal access to sexual and reproductive health for all (ways forward in terms of policy and funding) and to raise the issue of reproductive health communication for young people and discuss ways to improve young people’s health, particularly through prevention. The discussion will be chaired by Mr Werner Haug, Director of the Technical Division of UNFPA, and moderated by Mrs Sarah Marniesse, with the Health Division of the French Development Agency.
