Sudan - Death of four peacekeepers from the United Nations Interim Security force for Abyei (UNISFA)

In a statement on August 3, France deplored the death of four Ethiopian UNISFA troops in a mine explosion during the passage of their convoy.

France is very concerned by the circumstances in which these four soldiers died. The injured peacekeepers could not be swiftly evacuated due to a lack of cooperation with the Sudanese authorities.

We hope for a full investigation into the conditions of this tragedy, and that the results of the investigation will be presented to the Security Council as soon as possible so that it may draw the consequences.

France hails the commitment of the UN secretary-general and UN forces in Sudan to peace, in difficult conditions. It notes that UNISFA’s efforts are essential to stabilizing the Abyei area and to the success of the peace process between Sudan and South Sudan. It is imperative for the authorities of the two States to cooperate among themselves and with the United Nations.

At a time when South Kordofan is experiencing strong tensions that could affect the return to stability after South Sudan’s independence, France renews its call to all the Sudanese parties to constructively consolidate peace in the region.
